About The Climate Festival § 112

The Climate Festival § 112 is broad climate celebration, that encourages and inspires people to support measures to ensure a sustainable future. We want to highlight the Norwegian population’s commitment to climate change mitigation, and to encourage collective action. Experts and politicians alone do not resolve the climate crisis – we must all contribute to the solutions and together create a culture for change – a brave culture!

Who is behind the festival

The Norwegian Climate Network initiates and coordinates the Climate Festival § 112. The network account for a few core events in the program, while volunteers and various organizations are responsible for the majority of the events. The first festival took place in January 2015, and it has been growing for each year.

In 2019, The Climate Festival § 112 and Oslo European Green Capital 2019 arranged an opening weekend together at SALT, in the center of Oslo. More than 10.000 people attended the opening weekend, and during the next three weeks another 10 – 20.000 (sorry, we dont count) people attended one of the other 150 festival events, in almost 30 municipalities all around in Norway.

See video from the opening weekend 2019.

Why we created the Climate Festival § 112

Climate change cannot be mitigated without increased democratic participation in all parts of society. The festival is inclusive and welcomes new groups and individuals to broaden the growing climate movement. We believe that positive feelings like hope and togetherness can inspire people to engage, and encourage politicians to take action.

The next festival is taking place in January 2020. It will be a powerful and playful mobilization, aimed to boost climate commitment in all levels of society. We are promising both large and small events all over the country, and that the sixt festival will be even bigger, more engaging and more relevant than ever before.

The meaning of § 112

The festival is a mobilization around Norway’s constitution article 112 – one of the most beautiful pieces of legislature in the world, protecting our common home!

“Every person has a right to an environment that is conducive to health and to a natural environment whose productivity and diversity are maintained. Natural resources should be managed on the basis of comprehensive long-term considerations whereby this right will be safeguarded for future generations as well.

In order to safeguard their right in accordance with the foregoing paragraph, citizens are entitled to information on the state of the natural environment and on the effects of any encroachment on nature that is planned or carried out.

The authorities of the State shall issue specific provisions for the implementation of these principles.”
